    Description

Roman Coins and their Values  ~ Volume III
The 3rd Century Crisis and Recovery AD 235-285
    by David R. Sear
This incredible book is an invaluable resource to the collector of Roman coins.
It covers the time period AD 235-285, from the Accession of Maximus to the death of Carinus.
"In this third volume, the number of catalogue entries has been greatly expanded to provide a turbulent half century which saw unprecedented debasement of the imperial money and the decentralization of the minting system within the Roman Empire."
The book starts with a comprehensive Glossary of Terms, a Legend Abbreviation list, denominations of the Roman Coinage, a thorough assessment of the Reverse Types of the Imperial coinage (based on deities and personifications, architecture, Emperors and their families, military conquests, legionary and geographical types, animals, propaganda, and posthumous types).
The next section is devoted to a discussion of the Countermarks on the AES Coinage of the Early empire, Roman mints from Augustus to the reform of Diocletian (with a map of the mints provided).  Mints and mint marks of the Later Roman Empire (along with a map of the Roman Imperial Mints) are then covered. A section of dating Roman Imperial Coins and a list of the principle chronological criteria of the Imperial Coinage from 27 BC to AD 491 follows.
This book gives illustrations of many coins for each leader as well as the coin prices at the time of publication.
For each ruler, there is a paragraph or two of description regarding his or her time of rule.
There is also a long list of books on Roman Coins for further reference sources.  There are pictures of the coins throughout the book
