Today we are happy to offer for sale a fabulous antique Jean Pouyat Limoges porcelain painted vase! This elegant and beautiful late 19th century art vase is the masterpiece of Jean Pouyat of France. A bit of info on the company:
A porcelain-making industry around Limoges became important in the 19th century. Eventually, many firms made porcelain in Limoges, and one of them was the company belonging to Jean Pouyat, who signed pieces made in his factory with 'J.P.' over an 'L.'
The Pouyat family had a tin-glazed-earthenware factory in St. Yrieix when the kaolin was discovered and Jean Pouyat's grandfather owned a kaolin mine there. Jean's father, Francois, ran a porcelain factory in Paris from the early 1800s to around 1840, and Jean established his own porcelain factory in Limoges in 1842.
Jean Pouyat died just a few years later, in 1849, and the business passed to his sons. In 1911, the Jean Pouyat Co. merged with William Guerin and Co. and, after the end of World War I, both companies became part of Bawo and Dotter. The Jean Pouyat marks were used until 1932, when Bawo and Dotter went out of business.
The large vase is beautifully crafted and detailed. The piece, crafted of fine Limoges porcelain, dates to the late Victorian era. The vase features a baluster-shaped body expertly and intricately hand-painted, with both front and back featuring a pale cream ground beautifully hand-painted with a multitude of delicate flowers in a naturalistic bouquet with Orientalia influence. The ornate and fanciful handles and base feature rococo scrolls highlighted in gilding. The neck is decorated with a neoclassical maroon on gold pattern. The piece is marked on the bottom "J. P. L. France" and "Patterson" who is no doubt the highly talented and skilled porcelain decorator who painted the vase. This lavish vase no doubt graciously displayed in a fancy Victorian parlor as pieces of this caliber were highly-prized and costly possessions. The vase presents well and is in good antique as-found condition, with wear and patina commensurate with age. There is minor loss to gilding; scattered scuffing; there are three chips around edge of top rim. Please review all photos before purchasing. Add old world European elegance to any well-appointed interior with this stunning vase...Fresh to the market!
