This fifth edition of the American Numismatic Society's contribution to the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum contains the coins of Syracuse, Tauromenium, Tyndaris, the Tyrrheni and Sicliotes. It completes the section on South Italy and Sicily and is the last ANS volume to use the larger format.
The book was prepared by Denyse Berend and the indices were compiled by Margaret Thompson. The catalogue and the indices serve all five volumes for South Italy and Syracuse.

The first index includes significant coins of Syracuse acquired while this volume was in preparation. Appendix 2, prepared by Carmen Arnold-Biucchi and Hyla Troxell, cotains coins of South Italy and Sicily. The majority of coins published in this book came by bequest of Edward Newell and published in 1988 by the ANS.

The three sections of the book area arranged as such: Syracuse - End of Sicily (Lots 1-1172); Appendix 1: Additional coins of Syracuse (Lots 1173-1218); Appendix 2: Additional coins of South Italy and Sicily (Lots 1219-1408). The material in the indices is arranged as follows:

Personal Names (In Greek and English)
Other inscriptions (In Greek and English)
Obverse Types (The most helpful index since it lists the picutres and rulers -such as Athena, Apollo, Nike, Lions, Bulls, Eagles, Dolphins, etc. Organized according to Gold, Silver Bronze obverse)
